National Night Out is a event that unites the community with law enforcement agencies.

National Night Out Topeka held its first planning meeting Tuesday night, and this year organizers are looking for more participation from the community.

NNO is teaming up with Safe Streets, The Topeka Police Department and the Shawnee Sheriff's Office to help local neighborhoods take a proactive stance against crime.

Over the summer, participating neighborhoods will get $200 from law enforcement agencies to hold events in their area to raise awareness about crime.

"We have one event every year in August, and we celebrate by getting our neighborhoods together and having law enforcement and city officials visit our neighborhoods and celebrate our unity between law enforcement and the community," Lead Volunteer Jon Michaels said.

In 2009, 30 neighborhoods participated in National Night Out. This year, organizers want to have 50.
